Their (our Founding Fathers) motives weren’t totally patriotic because any captured ships carrying sugar could be auctioned off as prizes. At the auction, a merchant could purchase a 50 lb. barrel of sugar, rum, or molasses for a fraction of the cost he would pay if bought from a merchant in the Caribbean.
