Who is Josh Haman?
Character Fronts Book Series

Josh Haman, like the other characters in the book, is a combination of people which makes him different from your “typical” book or movie hero. In many ways, he’s my version of James Thurber’s Walter Mitty. So who is Joshua Jonathan Haman

First, he is a Naval Aviator and a helicopter pilot.  Why?  Helicopters operate in an unforgiving environment that is very close to the ground at night, in the mountains and in crappy weather.  In a helicopter you often see the face of the bad guy shooting at you.

Flying a helicopter is very different than flying a tactical jet.  A helicopter is a noisy, vibrating machine often flown with the doors and windows open down in the weeds very close to the ground.  Your operating environment is often well below five hundred feet.  Any movement of one control necessitates the coordinated movement of the other two.  Automatic stabilization equipment makes it is easier but your hands and feet are still moving all the time.  In a tactical jet, you sit in an air conditioned, pressurized cockpit and zip along effortlessly at four hundred and fifty knots thousands of feet in the air. The tactical fighter pilot is a voting member on a committee of computers.  They fail and you have no choice but to eject.

Helicopter aviation is where the rubber meets the road in special operations, search and rescue, re-supply, medical evacuation, assault and close air support missions.  Flying helicopters is not glamorous, but it is where the action is.  Now you know why Josh is a helicopter pilot.

Second, Josh is a risk taker who is not afraid to look for alternatives that conventional thinkers would never contemplate.  To others who may think his off the wall ideas are risky, to Josh, they appear to be normal because he’s already thought of practical ways to mitigate the risks.

Third, since he was a young ten year old, he wanted to become a military pilot.  His father got his wings in the US Army Air Corps in 1939, flew in World War II and the Korean War and retired from the US Air Force after a tour in Vietnam.  His grandfather flew in WWI.  Unlike the Air Force, the Navy was willing to guarantee Josh pilot training assuming he passed the mental tests and flight physical before he was commissioned.  When Josh earned the gold wings of a Naval Aviator, it made him a third generation military aviator.  How many of those are out there?

Fourth, he’s a nice Jewish boy.  How many novels have American military heroes who are Jews?  ‘Nuff said.

In BIG MOTHER 40 and the follow-on books in the series, you’ll learn much more about the details of Josh’s life, his Navy career and his family and dedication to this great country of ours.  Many of vignettes in the Josh Haman series of books are based on real events from my life and Navy career, so yeah, Josh and I have similar backgrounds.  Why wouldn’t he, I created him!
